Abd al-Rahman bin Ka'b bin Malik (may Allah have mercy on him) said: When my father's eyesight weakened, I used to be his guide. Whenever I took him out for the Friday prayer, he would seek forgiveness for Abu Umamah Sayyiduna As'ad bin Zurarah (may Allah be pleased with him). I said: Dear father, why do you seek forgiveness for As'ad bin Zurarah every time you hear the adhan on Friday? He said: My son, As'ad was the first person who gathered us for the Friday prayer in Madinah before the arrival of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), in a low-lying spot of the lava field (harrah) of Banu Bayadah, at Naqi' al-Hadabat. I asked: How many were you on that day? He said: Forty men.
