حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ اللهِ بْنُ أَحْمَدَ بْنِ حَنْبَلٍ، حَدَّثَنِي أَبِي، حَدَّثَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ سَلَمَةَ الْحَرَّانِيُّ، عَنْ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ إِسْحَاقَ، عَنْ طَلْحَةَ بْنِ عُبَيْدِ اللهِ بْنِ كَرِيزٍ، عَنِ الْحَسَنِ، قَالَ: دُعِيَ عُثْمَانُ بْنُ أَبِي الْعَاصِ إِلَى خِتَانٍ فَأَبَى أَنْ يُجِيبَ، فَقِيلَ لَهُ: فَقَالَ: «إِنَّا كُنَّا لَا نَأْتِي الْخِتَانَ عَلَى عَهْدِ رَسُولِ اللهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ، وَلَا يُدَعَى إِلَيْهِ»
Hasan al-Basri (may Allah have mercy on him) narrates: Sayyiduna Uthman bin Abi al-As (may Allah be pleased with him) was invited to a circumcision (gathering), and he refused to go. He was asked (the reason), and he said: "In the time of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) we did not go to circumcisions (gatherings), nor were people invited to them."
