حَدَّثَنَا يَحْيَى بْنُ أَيُّوبَ الْعَلَّافُ الْمِصْرِيُّ، ثنا سَعِيدُ بْنُ أَبِي مَرْيَمَ، ثنا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ جَعْفَرٍ، عَنْ سُهَيْلِ بْنِ أَبِي صَالِحٍ، عَنْ حَكِيمِ بْنِ حَكِيمِ بْنِ عَبَّادِ بْنِ حُنَيْفٍ، عَنْ عُثْمَانَ بْنِ أَبِي الْعَاصِ، قَالَ: قَدِمْتُ فِي وَفْدِ ثَقِيفٍ حِينَ وَفَدُوا عَلَى رَسُولِ اللهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ، فَلَبِسْنَا حُلَلَنَا بِبَابِ النَّبِيِّ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ، فَقَالُوا: مَنْ يُمْسِكُ لَنَا رَوَاحِلَنَا، وَكُلُّ الْقَوْمِ أَحَبَّ الدُّخُولَ عَلَى النَّبِيِّ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ وَكَرِهَ التَّخَلُّفَ عَنْهُ، قَالَ عُثْمَانُ: وَكُنْتُ أَصْغَرَ الْقَوْمِ، فَقُلْتُ: إِنْ شِئْتُمْ أَمْسَكَتُ لَكُمْ عَلَى أَنَّ عَلَيْكُمْ عَهْدَ اللهِ لَتُمْسِكُنَّ لِي إِذَا خَرَجْتُمْ، قَالُوا: فَذَلِكَ لَكَ، فَدَخَلُوا عَلَيْهِ ثُمَّ خَرَجُوا فَقَالُوا: انْطَلَقْ بِنَا، قُلْتُ: أَيْنَ؟ فَقَالُوا: إِلَى أَهْلِكَ، فَقُلْتُ: ضَرَبْتُ مِنْ أَهْلِي حَتَّى إِذَا حَلَلْتُ بِبَابِ النَّبِيِّ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ أَرْجِعُ وَلَا أَدْخَلُ عَلَيْهِ، وَقَدْ أَعْطَيْتُمُونِي مِنَ الْعَهْدِ مَا قَدْ عَلِمْتُمْ؟ قَالُوا: فَأَعْجِلْ فَإِنَّا قَدْ كَفَيْنَاكَ الْمَسْأَلَةَ، لَمْ نَدَعْ شَيْئًا إِلَّا سَأَلْنَاهُ عَنْهُ، فَدَخَلْتُ فَقُلْتُ: يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ، ادْعُ اللهَ أَنْ يُفَقِّهَنِي فِي الدِّينِ وَيُعَلِّمَنِي، قَالَ: «مَاذَا قُلْتَ؟» فَأَعَدْتُ عَلَيْهِ الْقَوْلَ، فَقَالَ: «لَقَدْ سَأَلْتَنِي شَيْئًا مَا سَأَلَنِي عَنْهُ أَحَدٌ مِنْ أَصْحَابِكَ، اذْهَبْ فَأَنْتَ أَمِيرٌ عَلَيْهِمْ وَعَلَى مَنْ تَقْدُمُ عَلَيْهِ مِنْ قَوْمِكَ، وَأُمَّ النَّاسَ بِأَضْعَفِهِمْ» فَخَرَجْتُ حَتَّى قَدِمْتُ عَلَيْهِ مَرَّةً أُخْرَى فَقُلْتُ: يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ، اشْتَكَيْتُ بَعْدَكَ، فَقَالَ: " ضَعْ يَدَكَ الْيُمْنَى عَلَى الْمَكَانِ الَّذِي تَشْتَكِي، وَقُلْ: أَعُوذُ بِعِزَّةِ اللهِ وَقُدْرَتِهِ مِنْ شَرِّ مَا أَجِدُ سَبْعَ مَرَّاتٍ " فَفَعَلْتُ فَشَفَانِي اللهُ عَزَّ وَجَلَّ
Sayyiduna Uthman bin Abi al-As (may Allah be pleased with him) said: I came with the delegation of Thaqif when they came to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him). We put on our finest garments at the door of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), and they said: "Who will hold our mounts for us?" Everyone wanted to go in to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and disliked being left behind. Uthman said: I was the youngest of the people, so I said: "If you wish, I will hold your mounts for you, on the condition that you give me the covenant of Allah that you will hold them for me when you come out." They said: "That is yours." So they went in to him (peace and blessings be upon him), then came out and said: "Come with us." I asked: "Where?" They said: "To your family." I said: "I travelled far from my family until I stopped at the door of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), and now I should go back without going in to him (peace and blessings be upon him), when you gave me the covenant that you know of?" They said: "Then hurry, for we have spared you the need to ask; we left nothing without asking him about it." So I went in (to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him)) and said: "O Messenger of Allah, pray to Allah to give me understanding of the religion and to teach me." He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "What did you say?" I repeated my words. He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "You have asked me for something that none of your companions asked me for. Go, you are the leader over them and over those of your people to whom you go, and lead the people in prayer according to the weakest of them." So I left, until I came to him (peace and blessings be upon him) once again and said: "O Messenger of Allah, I have fallen ill since leaving you." He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Place your right hand on the spot where you feel pain and say: 'A'udhu bi-'izzatillahi wa qudratihi min sharri ma ajid' (I seek refuge in the might of Allah and His power from the evil of what I feel), seven times." I did so, and Allah, the Mighty and Majestic, healed me.
