Sayyiduna Talhah bin Amr (may Allah be pleased with him) said: When a man came to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) and had no acquaintance in Madinah with whom to stay, he would stay with the People of the Suffah. I too had some companions there. Every day, from the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), two mudds of dates were given between every two men. One day, while the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) was in one of the prayers, one of his (peace and blessings be upon him) Companions called out: O Messenger of Allah, the dates have burned our stomachs, and death has moved away from us. When the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) completed the prayer, he stood up, praised and extolled Allah, then mentioned the hardship he had faced from his people. He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "My two companions and I spent ten-odd days with no food except barir (a wild fruit), until we came to our brothers among the Ansar, and they shared their food with us, and most of their food was dates. By the One besides whom there is no true god, if I could find bread and meat for you, I would certainly feed you with it. And perhaps you, or whoever of you lives to see it, will reach a time when people will wear clothes like the coverings of the Ka'bah, and large bowls full of food will be brought to you morning and evening."
