It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abu Umamah (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "My Lord came to me in the most beautiful form and said: O Muhammad! I said: Here I am, at Your service and ready to obey You. He said: Over what does the Highest Assembly (al-Mala' al-A'la) dispute? I said: I do not know. Then He placed His hand on my chest, and in that very place I came to know all the matters of this world and the Hereafter about which I had been asked. Then He said: Over what does the Highest Assembly dispute? I said: Over the ranks and the expiations. The ranks are: performing ablution thoroughly in the cold, and waiting for the next prayer after a prayer. He said: You have spoken the truth; whoever does that will live in goodness and die in goodness, and as regards his sins he will be as he was on the day he was born from his mother. And the expiations are: feeding people, spreading the greeting of salam, gentle speech, and praying at night while people are asleep." Then he said: "O Allah, I ask You for doing good deeds, leaving bad deeds, love of the poor, and forgiveness, and that You accept my repentance; and when You intend a trial (fitnah) for a people, then save me without my being put to trial."
