It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abu Umamah (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) gave Sayyiduna Abu Dharr (may Allah be pleased with him) a slave and said: "Feed him from what you yourself eat, and clothe him from what you yourself wear." Sayyiduna Abu Dharr (may Allah be pleased with him) had one garment; he tore it into two halves, tied one half around himself as a waist-wrap and gave the other half to the slave. At that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said to him: "What is the matter, that I see your garment like this?" He said: O Messenger of Allah, was it not you who said: Feed them from what you yourselves eat and clothe them from what you yourselves wear? He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Yes." He said: Then shall I free him? He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "O Abu Dharr, may Allah reward you for it."
