حَدَّثَنَا إِبْرَاهِيمُ بْنُ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ عِرْقٍ الْحِمْصِيُّ، ثنا سُلَيْمَانُ بْنُ سَلَمَةَ الْخَبَائِرِيُّ، ثنا زَيْدُ بْنُ يَحْيَى بْنِ عُبَيْدٍ الدِّمَشْقِيُّ، ثنا عَبْدُ اللهِ بْنُ الْعَلَاءِ بْنِ زَبْرٍ، حَدَّثَنِي الْقَاسِمُ بْنُ عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ أَبُو عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ، قَالَ: سَمِعْتُ أَبَا أُمَامَةَ الْبَاهِلِيَّ يَقُولُ: خَرَجَ رَسُولُ اللهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ عَلَى مَشْيَخَةٍ مِنَ الْأَنْصَارِ بِيضٌ لِحَاهُمْ، فَقَالَ: «يَا مَعَاشِرَ الْأَنْصَارِ، حَمِّرُوا وَصَفِّرُوا، وَخَالِفُوا أَهْلَ الْكِتَابِ»
فَقُلْنَا: يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ، أَهْلُ الْكِتَابِ، لَا يَتَخَفَّفُونَ، وَلَا يَنْتَعِلُونَ، فَقَالَ: «تَخَفَّفُوا وَانْتَعِلُوا، وَخَالِفُوا أَهْلَ الْكِتَابِ»
قُلْنَا: يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ، أَهْلُ الْكِتَابِ يَقُصُّونَ عَثَانِينَهُمْ، وَيُطِيلُونَ سِبَالَهُمْ، فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ: «قُصُّوا سِبَالَكُمْ، وَاعْفُوا ثَعَانِينَكُمْ»
فَقُلْنَا: يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ، أَهْلُ الْكِتَابِ، لَا يَتَخَفَّفُونَ، وَلَا يَنْتَعِلُونَ، فَقَالَ: «تَخَفَّفُوا وَانْتَعِلُوا، وَخَالِفُوا أَهْلَ الْكِتَابِ»
قُلْنَا: يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ، أَهْلُ الْكِتَابِ يَقُصُّونَ عَثَانِينَهُمْ، وَيُطِيلُونَ سِبَالَهُمْ، فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ: «قُصُّوا سِبَالَكُمْ، وَاعْفُوا ثَعَانِينَكُمْ»
Sayyiduna Abu Umamah al-Bahili (may Allah be pleased with him) said: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) came out to some elders of the Ansar whose beards were white, and said: "O assembly of the Ansar! Dye your hair red or yellow, and differ from the People of the Book."
We said: O Messenger of Allah! The People of the Book do not wear leather socks or sandals. He said: "Wear leather socks and sandals, and differ from the People of the Book."
We said: O Messenger of Allah! The People of the Book trim the hair of their chins and grow their moustaches long. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Trim your moustaches and let your beards grow."
We said: O Messenger of Allah! The People of the Book do not wear leather socks or sandals. He said: "Wear leather socks and sandals, and differ from the People of the Book."
We said: O Messenger of Allah! The People of the Book trim the hair of their chins and grow their moustaches long. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Trim your moustaches and let your beards grow."
