It is narrated from Sayyiduna Anas bin Malik (may Allah be pleased with him) that his paternal uncle, Sayyiduna Anas bin al-Nadr (may Allah be pleased with him), could not take part in the Battle of Badr, so he said: "I missed the first battle of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) against the polytheists. If Allah lets me be present with the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) in a battle, Allah will surely see what I do." Then, when the day of Uhud came, he faced the polytheists, and the people were routed. He said: "O Allah, I apologise to You for what these have done" - meaning the Muslims - "and I declare myself innocent before You of what these have brought" - meaning the polytheists. Then he took up his sword and met Sayyiduna Sa'd bin Mu'adh (may Allah be pleased with him), and said: "O Sa'd, I can smell the fragrance of Paradise right by Uhud." Then he went forward and was martyred. He could not be recognised until his sister recognised him by the shape of his fingertips. There were more than eighty wounds on his body, from spear thrusts, sword strikes and arrow shots combined.
