Sulayman bin Habib al-Muharibi (may Allah have mercy on him) said: I went out on a military expedition. When I passed through Hims, I went to the market to buy the things a traveller cannot do without. When I looked towards the door of the mosque, it occurred to me: if only I went in and prayed two rak'ahs. When I went in, I saw Thabit bin Ma'bad, Ibn Abi Zakariyya and Makhul with a group of people from Damascus. When I saw them, I went to them and sat with them. They talked about some things, then they said: We want to go to Sayyiduna Abu Umamah al-Bahili (may Allah be pleased with him). So they got up and I got up with them, and we went in to him. We found an old man who had become frail and aged, yet his intellect and speech were far better than his outward appearance. The first thing he told us was: This gathering of yours is part of what Allah has conveyed; Allah's proof has been established against you. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) conveyed what he (peace and blessings be upon him) was sent with, and his (peace and blessings be upon him) Companions conveyed what they heard, so you too convey what you hear: "There are three kinds of people, each of whom is under the guarantee of Allah: a man who goes out in the path of Allah; he is under the guarantee of Allah until He admits him to Paradise, or he returns with whatever reward or spoils he has gained. And a man who enters his house with a greeting of peace." Then he said: "In Hell there is a bridge with seven arches, and on the middle one of them is the reckoning and judgement. A servant will be brought, and when he reaches the middle arch, it will be said to him: Whose debt do you owe?" And he recited this verse: "And they will not be able to hide any statement from Allah" [Surah al-Nisa: 42]. "He will say: My Lord, I owe such-and-such a person such-and-such. It will be said to him: Pay your debt. He will say: I have nothing; how can I pay? It will be said: Take from his good deeds. So his good deeds will continue to be taken until he has no good deed left. When his good deeds are exhausted, it will be said: His good deeds are exhausted. Now take from the sins of the one who is claiming from him and load them on him. It has also reached me that some men will come with good deeds like mountains, yet their good deeds will continue to be taken for those who claim against them until they too have no good deed left."
