It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abu Umamah (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Modesty and reticence of speech are part of faith; they both bring one near to Paradise and keep one far from Hell. And obscenity and foul speech are from Satan; they both bring one near to Hell and keep one far from Paradise." At this a Bedouin said to Abu Umamah (may Allah be pleased with him): We say in poetry that reticence of speech is part of foolishness. He said: Do you see me saying, "The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said," and you want to make it seem better with your foul-smelling poetry (that is, you present your poetry against the saying of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him))?
