Mu'jam Kabir Tabarani 7402 — he presented the Messenger of Allah ﷺ

حَدَّثَنَا عَمْرُو بْنُ حَفْصٍ السَّدُوسِيُّ، ثنا عَاصِمُ بْنُ عَلِيٍّ، ثنا ابْنُ أَبِي ذِئْبٍ، عَنِ الزُّهْرِيِّ، عَنْ عُبَيْدِ اللهِ بْنِ عَبْدِ اللهِ بْنِ عُتْبَةَ، عَنِ ابْنِ عَبَّاسٍ، عَنِ الصَّعْبِ بْنِ جَثَّامَةَ، أَنَّهُ أَهْدَى إِلَى رَسُولِ اللهِ صَلَّى الله عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمْ حِمَارًا وَحْشِيًّا، فَرَدَّهُ عَلَيْهِ، فَلَمَّا رَأَى مَا فِي وَجْهِي مِنْ رَدِّ هَدِيَّتِهِ، قَالَ: «أَمَا إِنَّهُ لَيْسَ بِنَا رَدٌّ عَلَيْكَ، وَلَكِنَّا حُرُمٌ»
It is narrated from Sayyiduna al-Sa'b bin Jaththamah (may Allah be pleased with him) that he presented the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) with a wild donkey as a gift, and he (peace and blessings be upon him) returned it to him. When he (peace and blessings be upon him) saw on his face the displeasure at having his gift returned, he said: "Listen, we have not returned it to you out of disregard for you; rather, we are in the state of ihram."
