Sayyiduna Safwan bin Assal al-Muradi (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) was on a journey when a man came and said: "O Muhammad!" The people said: "Lower your voice." He said: "O Messenger of Allah, a man loves a people though he has not seen them." He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "A person is with the one he loves." Then he asked him about wiping over the leather socks, and he (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Three days and their nights for the traveller, and a day and a night for the resident. He should not take them off because of urination, sleep or defecation, except for major ritual impurity (janabah)." Then he asked him about repentance, and he (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Repentance has a door in the west, the distance of a journey of seventy years or forty years. It will remain so until some of the signs of your Lord come: the rising of the sun from the west."
