Sayyiduna Safwan bin Assal al-Muradi (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: I came to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) while he (peace and blessings be upon him) was reclining in the mosque on a cloak of his. I said: "O Messenger of Allah, I have come seeking knowledge." He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Welcome to the seeker of knowledge. The angels surround the seeker of knowledge and shade him with their wings, then, out of love for his knowledge, they mount one upon another until they reach the lowest heaven. What have you come to seek?" Safwan (may Allah be pleased with him) says: I said: "O Messenger of Allah, we keep travelling between Makkah and Madinah, so give us a ruling about wiping over the leather socks (khuffs)." The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Three days for the traveller, and a day and a night for the resident."
