It is narrated from Sayyiduna Suhayb (may Allah be pleased with him) that Sayyiduna Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) passed by with a captive of his, in order to seek a guarantee of safety for him from the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), while Suhayb (may Allah be pleased with him) was sitting in the mosque. He asked Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him): Who is this with you? He said: A captive of mine from the polytheists; I am seeking a guarantee of safety for him from the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him). Suhayb (may Allah be pleased with him) said: There was a place for the sword in this man's neck. Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) became angry, and the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) saw him and said: "Why is it that I see you angry?" He said: I passed by Suhayb with this captive of mine, and he said: There was a place for the sword in this man's neck. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Perhaps you hurt him." He said: No, by Allah. He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Had you hurt him, you would have hurt Allah and His Messenger."
