It is narrated from Sayyiduna Samurah bin Jundub (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) used to say: "There is no regret in this world except for three men: a man who has a field and a camel for drawing water with which he irrigates his land; then, when the thirst of his land becomes severe and its fruits have come out, his water-drawing camel dies. So he feels regret for that camel of his, which he had trained to draw water, that he will not find another like it, and he also feels regret for the fruit of his land, that it will be spoiled before he can devise some means for it. The second is a man who has a swift horse; he met an army of disbelievers, and when the two forces drew near, the enemies of Allah were defeated, and the man raced ahead on his horse; when he was about to catch up with the enemy, his horse broke down and fell under him, and he was left standing beside it. So he feels regret for his horse, that he will not find another like it, and he also feels regret for the victory that slipped from his hands when he had come so close to it. And the third is a man who has a wife with whose appearance and religion he is pleased; then she died giving birth to a boy. So he feels regret for his wife, thinking that he will not find another like her, and he also feels regret for his child, fearing that he may be lost and perish for want of a wet nurse." He said: "And this is the greatest of those regrets."
