Sayyiduna Samurah (may Allah be pleased with him) says: A Bedouin man came to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and asked him (peace and blessings be upon him) for a ruling: what is lawful for a man and what is unlawful for him regarding his wealth, his sacrifice, his livestock, his 'atirah, and his fara' (the sacrifice of a camel's firstborn), regarding the offspring of his camels and their barrenness? The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said to him: "I make lawful for you the good and pure things, and I make unlawful for you the impure things, except that you are in dire need of some food, in which case you may eat of it until you no longer need it." At that time the man asked him (peace and blessings be upon him) again: What is my need such that, when I reach it, I may eat that (unlawful thing), or what is my sufficiency that makes me independent of it? The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "If you hope for new births (from your she-camels), then sustain yourself with the meat of your livestock until those new births; or if you hope for rain which you will get in time, then sustain yourself with the meat of your livestock until it and until your new births; or if you hope for some gain of wealth, then sustain yourself with the meat of your livestock until it. And if you hope for none of these, then feed your family whatever seems fit to you until you no longer need it." The Bedouin asked: What is the sufficiency upon finding which I should leave it? He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "When you have satisfied your family with an evening drink of milk, then avoid the food that has been made unlawful for you. As for the rest of your wealth, all of it is lawful; nothing of it is unlawful, except that among the offspring of your camels there is a 'fara'', and among the offspring of your goats there is a 'fara''. Let your livestock nourish it until you become independent, then if you wish, feed it to your family, and if you wish, give its meat in charity." And he (peace and blessings be upon him) ordered him to offer ten as 'atirah out of every hundred of his goats.
