Mu'jam Kabir Tabarani 6921 — the Messenger of Allah ﷺ ordered us

حَدَّثَنَا أَحْمَدُ بْنُ عَلِيٍّ الْأَبَّارُ، ثنا عَبْدُ الرَّحْمَنِ بْنُ بَكْرِ بْنِ الرَّبِيعِ بْنِ مُسْلِمٍ، ثنا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ حُمْرَانَ، عَنْ إِسْمَاعِيلَ بْنِ مُسْلِمٍ، عَنِ الْحَسَنِ، عَنْ سَمُرَةَ، قَالَ: «أَمَرَنَا رَسُولُ اللهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ إِذَا كُنَّا ثَلَاثَةً أَنْ نُقَدِّمَ أَحَدَنَا، فَيَكُونَ إِمَامًا، وَإِذَا كُنَّا اثْنَيْنِ صَفَفْنَا صَفًّا»
Sayyiduna Samurah (may Allah be pleased with him) said: the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) ordered us that when we are three, we should put one of us forward to be the imam, and when we are two, we should form a single row.
