Mu'jam Kabir Tabarani 6722 — the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said one day

حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ اللهِ بْنُ أَحْمَدَ بْنِ حَنْبَلٍ، ثنا الْفُضَيْلُ بْنُ الْحُسَيْنِ أَبُو كَامِلٍ الْجَحْدَرِيُّ، ثنا أَبُو عَوَانَةَ، عَنْ فِرَاسٍ، عَنِ الشَّعْبِيِّ، عَنْ سَمُرَةَ، قَالَ: قَالَ رَسُولُ اللهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ ذَاتَ يَوْمٍ: «هَهُنَا أَحَدٌ مِنْ بَنِي النَّجَّارِ؟» فَنَادَى ثَلَاثًا لَا يُجِيبُهُ أَحَدٌ، ثُمَّ إِنَّ رَجُلًا أَجَابَهُ، فَقَالَ: «سَمِعْتَ نِدَائِي؟» قَالَ: نَعَمْ، قَالَ: «إِنَّ فُلَانًا الَّذِي تُوُفِّيَ مِنْكُمْ قَدِ احْتَبَسَ عَنِ الْجَنَّةِ، مِنْ أَجْلِ الدَّيْنِ الَّذِي عَلَيْهِ، فَإِنْ شِئْتُمْ فَافْدُوهُ، وَإِنْ شِئْتُمْ فَأَسْلِمُوهُ إِلَى عَذَابِ اللهِ»
Sayyiduna Samurah (may Allah be pleased with him) says that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said one day: "Is anyone from Banu al-Najjar here?" He (peace and blessings be upon him) called out three times, but no one answered. Then a man answered him (peace and blessings be upon him), and he (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Did you hear my call?" He said: "Yes." He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "So-and-so among you who has passed away has been held back from Paradise because of the debt he owes. If you wish, ransom him, and if you wish, hand him over to the punishment of Allah."
