It is narrated from Sayyiduna Salamah bin al-Akwa' (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) gave the banner to Sayyiduna Abu Bakr al-Siddiq (may Allah be pleased with him) and sent him to one of the fortresses of Khaybar. He killed some people, then returned without a victory, though he had striven his utmost. So he (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Tomorrow I will give this banner to a man who loves Allah and His Messenger; Allah will grant victory at his hands; he is not one who flees." So he (peace and blessings be upon him) called Sayyiduna Ali bin Abi Talib (may Allah be pleased with him), while his eyes were sore. He (peace and blessings be upon him) applied his saliva to his eyes, then said: "Take this banner, until Allah grants you victory." Sayyiduna Salamah (may Allah be pleased with him) said: By Allah, he set off at a brisk pace and I followed close behind him, until he planted the banner in a heap of stones. A Jew looked down at him from the top of the fortress and asked: Who are you? He said: I am Ali bin Abi Talib. The Jew said: By that (Book) which was revealed to Musa (peace be upon him), you have overcome them. The narrator said: He did not return until Allah granted victory at his hands.
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Salamah bin al-Akwa' (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Today I will give this banner to a man whom Allah and His Messenger love, and who loves Allah and His Messenger." Then the Prophet of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) sent me to call Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him). I brought him while his eyes were sore, and he (peace and blessings be upon him) applied his saliva to his eyes.
Sayyiduna Salamah bin al-Akwa' (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated: I travelled with the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), and I never once saw him pray after Fajr or after Asr.
