Sayyiduna Salman al-Farisi (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: Sayyiduna Abu Bakr and Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) came to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), and the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Among the traits of the hypocrite are these: when he speaks he lies, when he promises he breaks it, and when he is entrusted he betrays." Then the two of them left the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) with heavy hearts. I met them and said: What is the matter? I see you both with heavy hearts. They said: Because of a hadith we heard from the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him); he (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Among the traits of the hypocrite are these: when he speaks he lies, when he promises he breaks it, and when he is entrusted he betrays." I said: Then did you not ask him (peace and blessings be upon him)? They said: Awe of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) overcame us. I said: But I will certainly ask him (peace and blessings be upon him). So I went to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) and said: Sayyiduna Abu Bakr and Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) met me, and they were both heavy-hearted; then I mentioned what they had said. He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "I did tell them that, but I did not mean it in the sense in which they are taking it. Rather, when the hypocrite speaks, he tells himself that he is lying; when he promises, he tells himself that he will not fulfil it; and when he is entrusted, he tells himself that he will betray."
