It is narrated from Sayyiduna Salman al-Farisi (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) went out to visit a sick man from the Ansar. When he went in to him, he placed his hand on his forehead and asked: "How do you find yourself?" He gave no reply. It was said: O Messenger of Allah! He is too occupied to answer you. He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Leave me alone with him." So the women left him and left the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) with him. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) raised his hand, and the sick man gestured that he should put his hand back where it had been. Then he (peace and blessings be upon him) called out: "O so-and-so! What do you find?" He said: I find good, and two beings have come to me, one black and one white. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) asked: "Which of the two is closer to you?" He said: The black one. He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "The good is little and the evil is much." He said: O Messenger of Allah! Benefit me with a supplication of yours. So the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) supplicated: "O Allah, forgive the much and increase the little." Then the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) asked: "What do you see now?" He said: May my father and mother be sacrificed for you, good; I see the good increasing and the evil fading away, and the black one has drawn back from me. He (peace and blessings be upon him) asked: "Which of your deeds was of the most use to you?" He said: I used to give people water to drink. Then the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Listen, O Salman! Do you notice any change in me?" I said: Yes, may my father and mother be sacrificed for you; I have seen you on many occasions, but I have never seen you in a state like today's. He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "I know what he is going through; every single vein of his is facing death separately."
