Mu'jam Kabir Tabarani 5957 — Sayyiduna Sahl bin Sa'd relates: We were

Sayyiduna Sahl bin Sa'd (may Allah be pleased with him) relates: We were with the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) when a man came and said: "O Messenger of Allah, some words passed between Banu Amr bin Awf until it reached the point of throwing stones." The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "This has long been between them; come, let us go to them." Ubayy bin Ka'b and Suhayl bin Bayda' (may Allah be pleased with them both) rose with him (peace and blessings be upon him), and he (peace and blessings be upon him) made peace between them. Meanwhile the time of prayer came, and Bilal (may Allah be pleased with him) called the adhan. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) was delayed in returning, so the people said to Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him): "Go forward." He asked: "Do you think that is right?" They said: "Yes." So he went forward. Then the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) arrived, and the people began to clap. It was the habit of Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) not to turn around in prayer, but when he heard the people clapping he turned and saw the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him). He began to step back, and he (peace and blessings be upon him) signalled to him to stay in his place, but he stepped back, and the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) went forward and led the people in prayer. When he (peace and blessings be upon him) had finished, he said: "O Abu Bakr, what prevented you from staying in your place when I signalled to you?" He said: "It does not befit the son of Abu Quhafah to go ahead of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him)." Then the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "What is the matter, that I see you clapping? Whoever is confronted by something in his prayer: saying tasbih is for men and clapping is for women."
