Sayyiduna Sahl bin Sa'd (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates that a quarrel broke out between two clans of the Ansar, of Banu Amr bin Awf, until they began throwing stones at one another. Someone came to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) with the news, and Sayyiduna Bilal (may Allah be pleased with him) had already given the adhan for the Zuhr prayer. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) set off to make peace between them, but he was delayed. So Sayyiduna Bilal (may Allah be pleased with him) came to Sayyiduna Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) and said: Will you lead the prayer if I call the iqamah? He said: Yes. So Bilal (may Allah be pleased with him) called the iqamah and Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) went forward. Then the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) came, making his way through the rows until he stood behind Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him), and the people began to clap. Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) would not look around in prayer, but when the clapping increased, he turned and saw that it was the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), so he began walking backwards. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) went forward and led the prayer. When he (peace and blessings be upon him) had completed the prayer, he turned to Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) and said: "What prevented you from going forward when I ordered you to?" He replied: Allah would not approve of the son of Abu Quhafah leading the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) in prayer. Then he (peace and blessings be upon him) turned to the people and said: "O people! What is the matter with you that when something happens to you in your prayer, you start clapping? Clapping is only for women, and tasbih (Subhan Allah) is for men."
