حَدَّثَنَا يَحْيَى بْنُ أَيُّوبَ، ثنا يَحْيَى بْنُ بُكَيْرٍ، ثنا عَبْدُ الْعَزِيزِ بْنُ أَبِي حَازِمٍ، عَنْ أَبِيهِ، عَنْ سَهْلِ بْنِ سَعْدٍ، أَنَّ رَجُلًا أَتَاهُ فَقَالَ: هَذَا فُلَانٌ، لَأَمِيرٌ مِنْ أُمَرَاءِ الْمَدِينَةِ يَدْعُوكَ غَدًا فَتَسُبَّ عَلِيًّا عِنْدَ الْمِنْبَرِ، قَالَ: فَأَقُولُ مَاذَا؟ قَالَ: تَقُولُ: أَبُو تُرَابٍ فَضَحِكَ سَهْلٌ، ثُمَّ قَالَ: وَاللهِ مَا سَمَّاهُ إِيَّاهُ إِلَّا رَسُولُ اللهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ، وَاللهِ مَا كَانَ مِنِ اسْمٍ أَحَبَّ إِلَيْهِ مِنْهُ، قَالَ عَبْدُ الْعَزِيزِ: فَقَالَ أَبِي: يَا أَبَا الْعَبَّاسِ كَيْفَ كَانَ ذَلِكَ؟ قَالَ: دَخَلَ عَلِيٌّ عَلَى فَاطِمَةَ بِنْتِ رَسُولِ اللهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ، ثُمَّ خَرَجَ فَاضْطَجَعَ فِي الْمَسْجِدِ، فَدَخَلَ النَّبِيُّ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ عَلَى فَاطِمَةَ فَقَالَ: «أَيْنَ ابْنُ عَمِّكِ؟» قَالَتْ: هُوَ ذَاكَ فِي الْمَسْجِدِ، فَخَرَجَ النَّبِيُّ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ فَوَجَدَ رِدَاءَهُ قَدْ سَقَطَتْ عَنْ ظَهْرِهِ وَخَلُصَ التُّرَابُ إِلَى ظَهْرِهِ، فَجَعَلَ رَسُولُ اللهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ يَمْسَحُ التُّرَابَ عَنْ ظَهْرِهِ، وَيَقُولُ: «اجْلِسْ أَبَا تُرَابٍ اجْلِسْ أَبَا تُرَابٍ» وَاللهِ مَا كَانَ لَهُ اسْمٌ أَحَبُّ إِلَيْهِ مِنْهُ، مَا سَمَّاهُ إِيَّاهُ إِلَّا رَسُولُ اللهِ صَلَّى اللَهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Sahl bin Sa'd (may Allah be pleased with him) that a man came to him and said: This so-and-so, who is one of the governors of Madinah, will call you tomorrow so that you revile Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) at the pulpit. He asked: What shall I say? He said: You should say: Abu Turab. At this Sayyiduna Sahl (may Allah be pleased with him) laughed, then said: By Allah, it was none other than the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) who gave him this name, and by Allah, no name was dearer to him than it. Abd al-Aziz said: My father (Abu Hazim) asked: O Abu al-Abbas, how did that come about? He said: Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) went in to Sayyidah Fatimah (may Allah be pleased with her), then came out from there and lay down in the mosque. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) came to Sayyidah Fatimah (may Allah be pleased with her) and asked: "Where is your cousin?" She said: He is in the mosque. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) went out and found that his cloak had fallen from his back and dust had got onto his back. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) began wiping the dust off his back, saying: "Sit up, O Abu Turab! Sit up, O Abu Turab!" By Allah, no name was dearer to him than this name, and it was none other than the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) who gave him this name.
