Sayyiduna Sahl bin Malik (may Allah be pleased with him) says: When the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) came to Madinah from the Farewell Pilgrimage, he ascended the pulpit, praised and glorified Allah, and then said: "O people, Abu Bakr has never displeased me, so recognise this right of his. O people, I am pleased with Abu Bakr, Umar, Uthman, Ali, Talhah, al-Zubayr, Sa'd and Abd al-Rahman bin Awf, and I am pleased with all the first Muhajirun, so recognise this right of theirs. O people, take care of me with regard to my Companions, my in-laws and the in-laws of my daughters; may Allah never call you to account for wronging any one of them. O people, remove what is objectionable from the Muslims, and when one of them dies, speak well of him."
