حَدَّثَنَا إِسْحَاقُ بْنُ إِبْرَاهِيمَ الدَّبَرِيُّ، عَنْ عَبْدِ الرَّزَّاقِ، عَنْ مَعْمَرٍ، عَنِ الزُّهْرِيِّ، عَنْ أَبِي أُمَامَةَ بْنِ سَهْلِ بْنِ حُنَيْفٍ قَالَ: دَخَلَ رَسُولُ اللهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ عَلَى أَسْعَدَ بْنِ زُرَارَةَ وَبِهِ وَجَعٌ يُقَالُ لَهُ: الشَّوْكَةُ، فَكَوَاهُ عَلَى عَاتِقِهِ، فَمَاتَ، فَقَالَ النَّبِيُّ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ: " بِئْسَ الْمَيِّتُ لِلْيَهُودِ، يَقُولُونَ: قَدْ دَاوَاهُ صَاحِبَهُ أَفَلَا نَفَعَهُ "
Abu Umamah bin Sahl bin Hunayf relates that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) went to Sayyiduna As'ad bin Zurarah (may Allah be pleased with him), who had an illness called "al-shawkah" (an ailment like the prick of a thorn). He (peace and blessings be upon him) cauterised him on his shoulder, and then he died. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "(This is) an evil death for the Jews; they will say: His companion treated him, so did it not benefit him?"
