حَدَّثَنَا بَكْرُ بْنُ سَهْلٍ، وَمُطَّلِبُ بْنُ شُعَيْبٍ الْأَزْدِيُّ، قَالَا: ثنا عَبْدُ اللهِ بْنُ صَالِحٍ، حَدَّثَنِي أَبُو شُرَيْحٍ أَنَّهُ: سَمِعَ سَهْلَ بْنَ أَبِي أُمَامَةَ بْنِ سَهْلِ بْنِ حُنَيْفٍ يُحَدِّثُ، عَنْ أَبِيهِ، عَنْ جَدِّهِ أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ قَالَ: «لَا تُشَدِّدُوا عَلَى أَنْفُسِكُمْ، فَإِنَّمَا هَلَكَ مَنْ كَانَ قَبْلَكُمْ بِتَشْدِيدهِمْ عَلَى أَنْفُسِهِمْ، وَسَتَجِدُونَ بَقَايَاهُمْ فِي الصَّوَامِعِ وَالدِّيَارَاتِ»
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Sahl bin Hunayf (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Do not be harsh upon yourselves, for those before you were destroyed only because of their harshness upon themselves, and you will find their remnants in the hermitages and monasteries."
