Sayyiduna Anas bin Malik (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated: When Sayyiduna Abd al-Rahman bin Awf (may Allah be pleased with him) emigrated to Madinah, the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) established brotherhood between him and Sayyiduna Sa'd (may Allah be pleased with him). Sa'd (may Allah be pleased with him) had two orchards and two wives, so Sa'd (may Allah be pleased with him) said to Abd al-Rahman: "Whichever of my two wives you wish, I will separate from her for you; and take whichever of my two orchards you wish." Abd al-Rahman (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "I have no need of your wife or your orchard; it was not for this that I accepted Islam. Rather, show me the way to the market." So he showed him the way to the market, although he had nothing at all. He would buy ghee, cheese, hides and other things and sell them, until he had gathered some wealth, and then he married. He came to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) with a trace of yellow on him. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said to him: "Abd al-Rahman, what is the matter?" He said: "O Messenger of Allah, I have married for a dowry of gold the weight of one date stone." He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Hold a wedding feast (walimah), even if only with one goat." Thereafter his trade was blessed and his wealth increased greatly. One day Sayyidah Aishah (may Allah be pleased with her) was in her house when she heard a sound by which Madinah shook. She asked: "What is this?" The people said: "This is the trade caravan of Abd al-Rahman bin Awf (may Allah be pleased with him) arriving from Syria." It consisted of seven hundred camels. Sayyidah Aishah (may Allah be pleased with her) said: "I remember that I heard the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) saying: 'I saw Abd al-Rahman bin Awf entering Paradise crawling on his knees.'" This reached Abd al-Rahman (may Allah be pleased with him), so he came to Sayyidah Aishah (may Allah be pleased with her) and asked her about the hadith that had reached him, and she narrated it to him. Abd al-Rahman (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "I make you my witness that this caravan, with its loads, its saddles and its gear, is in the path of Allah, the Mighty and Majestic."
