Sayyiduna Zayd bin Khalid al-Juhani (may Allah be pleased with him) said: A man came to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) while I was with him (peace and blessings be upon him), and he said: O Messenger of Allah, tell me about a found item (luqatah). The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said to him: "Announce it for one year; if no one comes seeking it, spend it."
He said: O Messenger of Allah, what is your view about a stray sheep? He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "It is for you, or for your brother, or for the wolf."
He said: O Messenger of Allah, what is your view about a stray camel? At this the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) became angry until his (peace and blessings be upon him) face turned red, then he said: "What have you to do with it? It has its feet and its water-skin with it; it goes to the water and eats from the trees until its owner finds it."
