It is narrated from Sayyiduna Zayd bin Khalid al-Juhani (may Allah be pleased with him) that a man asked the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him): O Messenger of Allah, tell me about a found item (luqatah). He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Take note of its bag and the cord it is tied with, then announce it for one year. If the one seeking it comes, return it to him; otherwise, spend it."
He said: Tell me about a stray sheep. He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Take it, for it is for you, or for your brother, or for the wolf."
He said: Tell me about a stray camel. At this the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) became angry until his (peace and blessings be upon him) cheeks turned red, then he said: "What have you to do with it? It has its feet and its water-skin with it; it goes to the water and eats from the trees. Leave it until its owner finds it."
