Mu'jam Kabir Tabarani 5218 — the Messenger of Allah ﷺ was asked

حَدَّثَنَا جَعْفَرُ بْنُ سُلَيْمَانَ النَّوْفَلِيُّ الْمَدَنِيُّ، ثنا إِبْرَاهِيمُ بْنُ الْمُنْذِرِ الْحِزَامِيُّ، ثنا ابْنُ أَبِي فُدَيْكٍ، عَنِ الضَّحَّاكِ بْنِ عُثْمَانَ، عَنْ بُسْرِ بْنِ سَعِيدٍ، عَنْ زَيْدِ بْنِ خَالِدٍ الْجُهَنِيِّ، أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ سُئِلَ عَنِ اللُّقَطَةِ؟ قَالَ: «عَرِّفْهَا سَنَةً، فَإِنْ جَاءَ صَاحِبُهَا، وَإِلَّا فَاعْرِفْ عِفَاصَهَا وَوِكَاءَهَا وَعَدَدَهَا، ثُمَّ كُلْهَا، فَإِنْ جَاءَ صَاحِبُهَا فَرَدَّهَا إِلَيْهِ»
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Zayd bin Khalid al-Juhani (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) was asked about a found item (luqatah), and he (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Announce it for one year. If its owner comes, [give it to him]; otherwise, take note of its bag, the cord it is tied with, and its number, then make use of it. If its owner comes later, return it to him."
