حَدَّثَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ النَّضْرِ الْأَزْدِيُّ، ثنا أَحْمَدُ بْنُ عَبْدِ الْمَلِكِ بْنِ وَاقِدٍ الْحَرَّانِيُّ، ح حَدَّثَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ عَمْرِو بْنِ خَالِدٍ الْحَرَّانِيُّ، حَدَّثَنِي أَبِي قَالَا: ثنا زُهَيْرٌ، ثنا أَبُو إِسْحَاقَ، أَنَّهُ سَمِعَ زَيْدَ بْنَ أَرْقَمَ، يَقُولُ: كُنَّا مَعَ رَسُولِ اللهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ فِي سَفَرٍ أَصَابَ النَّاسُ فِيهِ شِدَّةٌ، فَقَالَ عَبْدَ اللهِ بْنُ أُبَيٍّ لِأَصْحَابِهِ: {لَا تُنْفِقُوا عَلَى مَنْ عِنْدَ رَسُولِ اللهِ حَتَّى يَنْفَضُّوا} [المنافقون: ٧] مِنْ حَوْلِهِ، وَقَالَ: {لَئِنْ رَجَعْنَا إِلَى الْمَدِينَةِ لَيُخْرِجَنَّ الْأَعَزُّ مِنْهَا الْأَذَلَّ} [المنافقون: ٨] فَأَتَيْتُ رَسُولَ اللهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ، فَأَخْبَرْتُهُ فَأَرْسَلَ إِلَى عَبْدِ اللهِ فَسَأَلَهُ فَاجْتَهَدَ بِيَمِينِهِ، فَقَالَ: كَذَبَ يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ، فَوَقَعَ فِي نَفْسِي مِمَّا قَالُوا شِدَّةٌ، حَتَّى أَنْزَلَ اللهُ تَصْدِيقِي فِي {إِذَا جَاءَكَ الْمُنَافِقُونَ} [المنافقون: ١] «فَدَعَاهُمُ النَّبِيُّ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ لَيَسْتَغْفِرَ لَهُمْ فَلَوَّوْا رُءُوسَهُمْ» وَقَوْلُهُ: {كَأَنَّهُمْ خُشُبٌ مُسَنَّدَةٌ} [المنافقون: ٤] قَالَ: «كَانُوا رِجَالًا أَجْمَلَ شَيْءٍ»
Sayyiduna Zayd bin Arqam (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: We were with the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) on a journey in which the people faced hardship, and Abdullah bin Ubayy said to his associates: "Do not spend on those who are with the Messenger of Allah until they disperse" [al-Munafiqun: 7] from around him. And he said: "If we return to Madinah, the more honourable will surely drive out the more humble from it" [al-Munafiqun: 8]. I came to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) and informed him (peace and blessings be upon him). He (peace and blessings be upon him) sent for Abdullah and asked him, and he swore a solemn oath and said: O Messenger of Allah! He is lying. What they said weighed heavily upon me, until Allah revealed confirmation of my truthfulness in (the surah) "When the hypocrites come to you" [al-Munafiqun: 1]. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) called them so that he might seek forgiveness for them, but they turned their heads away. And concerning the saying of Allah, "As if they were propped-up pieces of timber" [al-Munafiqun: 4], he said: They were very handsome men.
