حَدَّثَنَا عَلِيُّ بْنُ عَبْدِ الْعَزِيزِ، ثنا الْقَعْنَبِيُّ، عَنْ مَالِكٍ، عَنْ أَبِي النَّضْرِ، مَوْلَى عُمَرَ بْنِ عُبَيْدِ اللهِ، عَنْ عُبَيْدِ اللهِ بْنِ عَبْدِ اللهِ بْنِ عُتْبَةَ بْنِ مَسْعُودٍ، أَنَّهُ دَخَلَ عَلَى أَبِي طَلْحَةَ الْأَنْصَارِيِّ يَعُودُهُ قَالَ: فَوَجَدْنَا عَنْدَهُ سَهْلُ بْنُ حُنَيْفٍ، قَالَ: فَدَعَا أَبُو طَلْحَةَ إِنْسَانًا فَنَزَعَ نَمَطًا كَانَ تَحْتَهُ، فَقَالَ لَهُ سَهْلُ بْنُ حُنَيْفٍ: لِمَ تَنْزِعُهُ؟ قَالَ: لِأَنَّ فِيهِ تَصَاوِيرَ وَقَدْ قَالَ رَسُولُ اللهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ فِيهَا مَا قَدْ عَلِمْتَهُ، فَقَالَ سَهْلٌ: أَوَ لَمْ يَقُلْ: «إِلَّا مَا كَانَ رَقْمًا فِي ثَوْبٍ؟» فَقَالَ: بَلَى، وَلَكِنَّهُ أَطْيَبُ لِنَفْسِي
Ubaydullah bin Abdullah bin Utbah said: I went to Abu Talhah al-Ansari (may Allah be pleased with him) to visit him in his illness, and we found Sahl bin Hunayf (may Allah be pleased with him) with him. Abu Talhah (may Allah be pleased with him) called a man and had a carpet bearing images removed from beneath him. Sahl bin Hunayf (may Allah be pleased with him) said to him: "Why are you removing it?" He said: "Because it has images on it, and the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said about them what you already know." Sahl said: "Did he (peace and blessings be upon him) not say: 'Except what is a design on cloth'?" He said: "Certainly, but removing it is more pleasing to my heart."
