Sayyiduna Rabi'ah bin Ruwa' al-Ansi (may Allah be pleased with him) came to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) and found him (peace and blessings be upon him) eating his evening meal. He (peace and blessings be upon him) invited him to the evening meal, and he ate. Then the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said to him: "Do you bear witness that there is no true god except Allah and that Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) is His servant and Messenger?" Rabi'ah (may Allah be pleased with him) said: I bear witness that there is no true god except Allah and that Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) is His servant and Messenger. He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Out of desire or out of fear?" Rabi'ah (may Allah be pleased with him) said: As for desire, by Allah, it is not in your hand; and as for fear, by Allah, I live in a land which your armies and your horses cannot reach. But I was made to fear, so I feared, and I was told to believe, so I believed. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "What an excellent orator from (the tribe of) Ans!" So he kept coming and going to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), then one time he came and bade him (peace and blessings be upon him) farewell. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said to him: "If you sense any danger, take refuge with the people of the village." So he set out, sensed some danger, went to take refuge in a village, and died there.
