Amrah bint Abdur Rahman (may Allah have mercy on her) narrates from Sayyiduna Rafi' bin Khadij (may Allah be pleased with him) that he was sitting by the pulpit of Marwan bin al-Hakam in Makkah while Marwan was addressing the people. Marwan mentioned Makkah and its virtue but did not mention Madinah, and Sayyiduna Rafi' (may Allah be pleased with him) was upset by this - and he had grown old. So he stood up towards him and said: O speaker! I see that you have spoken at length about Makkah and mentioned some of its virtue, while the virtue of it that you have left unmentioned is greater still, and you have not mentioned Madinah. Yet I bear witness that I heard the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) saying: "Madinah is better than Makkah."
