Bushayr bin Yasar (may Allah have mercy on him) narrates from Sayyiduna Sahl bin Abi Hathmah and Sayyiduna Rafi' bin Khadij (may Allah be pleased with them both); they both said: Abdullah bin Sahl bin Zayd and Muhayyisah bin Mas'ud set out, until, when they reached Khaybar, they separated for some business there. Then Abdullah bin Sahl was found slain, and Muhayyisah buried him. Then he, Huwayyisah - the two sons of Mas'ud - and Abdur Rahman bin Sahl came to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). Abdur Rahman began to speak, although he was the youngest of them, so the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Let the elders (speak)." So his two companions spoke, and he spoke along with them. Then they told him (peace and blessings be upon him) about the killing of Abdullah bin Sahl, and the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Will you swear fifty oaths that so-and-so killed your companion?" They said: How can we swear to something we did not witness? He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Then the Jews will clear themselves by swearing fifty oaths." They said: How can we accept the oaths of a disbelieving people? So when the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) saw this situation, he paid the blood money himself.
