Mu'jam Kabir Tabarani 4369 — from his grandfather Sayyiduna Rafi' bin

Abayah bin Rifa'ah bin Rafi' bin Khadij (may Allah have mercy on him) narrates from his grandfather Sayyiduna Rafi' bin Khadij (may Allah be pleased with him), who said: We were with the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) at Dhu al-Hulayfah, and some camels and sheep were obtained (as spoils). The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) was at the rear of the people. The people hurried, slaughtered (the animals) and set the pots on the fire. Then the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) reached them and gave orders about the cooking pots, and they were overturned. Then he (peace and blessings be upon him) divided (the spoils) and counted ten sheep as equal to one camel. Among the people a camel began to bolt; they tried to catch it but it wore them out, so a man shot an arrow at it and stopped it. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "These animals too have a tendency to bolt like wild animals, so whichever of them bolts from you, do this with it." My grandfather (Sayyiduna Rafi', may Allah be pleased with him) said: We hope, or we fear, that we will meet the enemy tomorrow and we will have no knives; may we slaughter with a reed? He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Whatever makes the blood flow and over which the name of Allah Almighty is mentioned, eat it, except a tooth and a nail. I will tell you the reason for that: the tooth is bone, and the nail is the knife of the Abyssinians."
