Abayah bin Rifa'ah bin Rafi' bin Khadij (may Allah have mercy on him) narrates from his grandfather Sayyiduna Rafi' bin Khadij (may Allah be pleased with him), who said: We were with the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) at Dhu al-Khalifah in Tihamah, and the people obtained some camels and sheep (as spoils). They hurried and began boiling them in pots. Then the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) reached them and gave orders about the cooking pots, and they were overturned. Then ten sheep were counted as equal to one camel. The narrator says: Then one of the camels bolted, and a man shot it with an arrow and stopped it. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "These animals too have a tendency to bolt like wild animals, so whichever of them gets out of your control, do this with it." Then Sayyiduna Rafi' bin Khadij (may Allah be pleased with him) came to him (peace and blessings be upon him) and said: O Messenger of Allah, we fear, or we hope, that we will meet the enemy, and we will have no knives with us; may we slaughter with a reed? The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Whatever makes the blood flow and over which the name of Allah is mentioned, eat it, except (what is slaughtered with) a tooth or a nail. I will tell you the reason for that: the tooth is bone, and the nail is the knife of the Abyssinians." Sayyiduna Rafi' (may Allah be pleased with him) says: Then a water-carrying camel fell into a well in Madinah, so it was slaughtered from its flank - that is, near its ribs - and Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) bought a tenth of it for one dirham.
