Nafi' (may Allah have mercy on him) narrates: Sayyiduna Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) used to rent out his farmland in the time of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), of Sayyiduna Abu Bakr, Sayyiduna Umar and Sayyiduna Uthman (may Allah be pleased with them), and in the early part of the rule of Sayyiduna Mu'awiyah (may Allah be pleased with him). Then a man came to him and said: Sayyiduna Rafi' bin Khadij (may Allah be pleased with him) says that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) forbade renting out farmland. Nafi' said: So Sayyiduna Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) went to Sayyiduna Rafi' (may Allah be pleased with him), and I went with him. Ibn Umar asked: What is this that has reached me about you, that you narrate something from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) concerning renting out farmland? Rafi' said: "Yes, the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) forbade renting out farmland." So after that, whenever Abdullah was asked about renting out farmland, he would say: Rafi' bin Khadij claims that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) forbade it.
