حَدَّثَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ عَبْدِ اللهِ الْحَضْرَمِيُّ، ثنا أَحْمَدُ بْنُ سِنَانَ، ثنا يَعْقُوبُ بْنُ مُحَمَّدٍ الزُّهْرِيُّ، ثنا رِفَاعَةُ بْنُ هُرَيْرِ بْنِ عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ بْنِ رَافِعِ بْنِ خَدِيجٍ، قَالَ: حَدَّثَنَا جَدِّي، عَنْ أَبِيهِ، قَالَ: جِئْتُ أَنَا وَعَمِّي إِلَى النَّبِيِّ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ وَهُوَ يُرِيدُ بَدْرًا، فَقُلْتُ: يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ إِنِّي أُرِيدُ أَنْ أَخْرَجَ مَعَكَ فَجَعَلَ يَقْبِضُ يَدَهُ وَيَقُولُ: «إِنِّي أَسْتَصْغِرُكَ وَلَا أَدْرِي مَا تَصْنَعُ إِذَا لَقِيتَ الْقَوْمَ» ، فَقُلْتُ: أَتَعَلَّمُ أَنْ أَرْمِيَ مَنْ رَمَى؟، فَرَدَّنِي
Rifa'ah bin Hurayr (may Allah have mercy on him) said: My grandfather told me, narrating from his father, that he (Rafi' bin Khadij, may Allah be pleased with him) said: My paternal uncle and I came to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) when he intended (to set out for) Badr. I said: O Messenger of Allah, I want to go out with you. He began to draw back his hand, saying: "I consider you young, and I do not know what you will do when you meet the enemy." I said: Do you know that I can shoot (in return) whoever shoots? (Even so) he sent me back.
