The narrator, who was one of the people of the Tree, relates: One day the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) led us in a prayer; he kept it short, then sat (in the tashahhud) and remained sitting for a long time. When he finished the prayer, we said: O Messenger of Allah, you prolonged the sitting in your prayer. He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "This was a prayer of hope and fear. In it I asked Allah for three things; He granted me two and withheld one. I asked Him not to send upon you a punishment like the one that came upon those before you, and He granted me that. I asked Him not to set over your community an enemy that would uproot it, and He granted me that as well. And I asked Him not to split you into factions and make you taste the violence of one another, and He did not grant me that."
