Mu'jam Kabir Tabarani 3904 — We used to sacrifice a single sheep

حَدَّثَنَا عَلِيُّ بْنُ عَبْدِ الْعَزِيزِ، ثنا الْقَعْنَبِيُّ، عَنْ مَالِكٍ، عَنْ عُمَارَةَ بْنِ صَيَّادٍ، أَنَّ عَطَاءَ بْنَ يَسَارٍ، أَخْبَرَهُ، أَنَّ أَبَا أَيُّوبَ الْأَنْصَارِيَّ، أَخْبَرَهُ، قَالَ: «كُنَّا نُضَحِّي بِالشَّاةِ الْوَاحِدَةِ يَذْبَحُهَا الرَّجُلُ عَنْهُ وَعَنْ أَهْلِ بَيْتِهِ، ثُمَّ تَبَاهَى النَّاسُ بَعْدُ فَصَارَتْ مُبَاهَاةً»
Sayyiduna Abu Ayyub al-Ansari (may Allah be pleased with him) said: We used to sacrifice a single sheep, which a man would slaughter on behalf of himself and his household; then later people began to vie with one another in boasting, and it became a matter of pride and show.
