Mu'jam Kabir Tabarani 386 — The Messenger of Allah ﷺ

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Usamah bin Zayd (may Allah be pleased with him); he said: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) and his Companions used to pardon the polytheists and the People of the Book, as Allah, the Mighty and Majestic, had commanded them, and they bore harm with patience. Allah, the Mighty and Majestic, said: "And you will surely hear much that is hurtful from those who were given the Book before you and from the polytheists" [Al Imran: 186] the whole verse. And the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) continued to act upon pardoning according to Allah's command, until Allah gave permission (to fight) concerning them. When the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) fought at Badr and Allah caused those of the great chiefs of Quraysh whom He killed to be slain, Ibn Ubayy (bin Salul) and the polytheists with him said: This matter has now become clear. So they pledged allegiance to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) upon Islam and became Muslims.
