It is narrated from Sayyiduna Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) that he went with the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) to the house of Maymunah (may Allah be pleased with her), the wife of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) - she was his (that is, Khalid's) maternal aunt and the maternal aunt of Ibn Abbas - and they found with her a roasted lizard (dabb) which her sister Hufaydah bint al-Harith had brought from Najd. She presented the lizard to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), and he (peace and blessings be upon him) rarely reached out his hand towards any food until he had been told about it and it had been named for him. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) reached out his hand towards the lizard, and one of the women present said: "Tell the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) what you have presented to him." The women said: "O Messenger of Allah, it is a lizard." So the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) withdrew his hand. Khalid bin al-Walid (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "O Messenger of Allah, is the lizard forbidden?" He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "No, but it is not found in the land of my people, so I find that I have an aversion to it." Khalid (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "Then I drew it towards myself and ate it while the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) was watching, and he did not forbid me."
