Sayyiduna Khabbab bin al-Aratt (may Allah be pleased with him) said concerning the saying of Allah, the Mighty and Majestic: "And do not drive away those who call upon their Lord morning and evening, seeking His Face" [al-An'am: 52]: Al-Aqra' bin Habis al-Tamimi and Uyaynah bin Hisn al-Fazari came, meaning to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), and they found the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) sitting with Sayyiduna Bilal, Sayyiduna Ammar bin Yasir, Sayyiduna Suhayb and Sayyiduna Khabbab bin al-Aratt (may Allah be pleased with them) among some of the weak people of the believers. When they saw them around him (peace and blessings be upon him), they looked down on them. So they came to him (peace and blessings be upon him), met him in private and said: We would like you to set aside for us a separate gathering with you by which the Arabs will recognise our superiority, for the delegations of the Arabs come to you, and we are ashamed that the Arabs should see us sitting with these slaves; or, when we come to you, make them get up and leave us, and when we have finished, seat them again if you wish. The narrator said: He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Very well." They said: Then write a document for us about this. The narrator said: He (peace and blessings be upon him) called for a sheet to write for them, and called Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) to write it. When he (peace and blessings be upon him) was about to do so, while we were sitting in a corner, Jibril (peace be upon him) came down with this verse: "And do not drive away those who call upon their Lord morning and evening" [al-An'am: 52]. Then, mentioning al-Aqra' bin Habis and his companion, He said: "And thus We have tried some of them by means of others, so that they say: 'Are these the ones whom Allah has favoured from among us?' Is not Allah most knowing of those who are grateful?" [al-An'am: 53]. Then He went on to say: "And when those who believe in Our verses come to you, say: Peace be upon you; your Lord has decreed mercy upon Himself" [al-An'am: 54]. The narrator said: So the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) threw the document away and called us. We came to him (peace and blessings be upon him) while he (peace and blessings be upon him) was saying: "Peace be upon you." So we drew close to him (peace and blessings be upon him) until we placed our knees against his (peace and blessings be upon him) knee.
The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) used to sit with us, and when he wished to get up, he would get up himself and leave us. So Allah, the Mighty and Majestic, revealed this verse: "And keep yourself patiently with those who call upon their Lord morning and evening, seeking His Face, and let not your eyes turn away from them, desiring the adornment of the life of this world" [al-Kahf: 28], meaning: do not keep company with the nobles; "and do not obey the one whose heart We have made heedless of Our remembrance, who follows his desire and whose affair has gone beyond bounds" [al-Kahf: 28]. The one whose heart was made heedless was Uyaynah and al-Aqra' bin Habis, and "furuta" means destruction. Then He set forth the parable of the two men and the parable of the life of this world. The narrator said: After that we would sit with the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), and when the time came at which he (peace and blessings be upon him) used to get up, we would stand up and leave him so that he (peace and blessings be upon him) could get up himself; otherwise he (peace and blessings be upon him) would wait patiently (remaining seated) until we got up.
