حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو خَلِيفَةَ، ثنا مُسْلِمُ بْنُ إِبْرَاهِيمَ، ثنا قُرَّةُ بْنُ خَالِدٍ، حَدَّثَنِي مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ سِيرِينَ، قَالَ: بَلَغَتِ النَّخْلَةُ عَلَى عَهْدِ عُثْمَانَ بْنِ عَفَّانَ رَضِيَ اللهُ عَنْهُ أَلْفَ دِرْهَمٍ، قَالَ: فَعَمَدَ أُسَامَةُ إِلَى نَخْلَةٍ فَنَقَرَهَا وَأَخْرَجَ جُمَّارَهَا، فَأَطْعَمَها أُمَّهُ، فَقَالُوا لَهُ: مَا حَمَلَكَ عَلَى هَذَا، وَأَنْتَ تَرَى النَّخْلَةَ قَدْ بَلَغَتْ أَلْفًا؟ فَقَالَ: «إِنَّ أُمِّي سَأَلَتْنِيهِ، وَلَا تَسْأَلُنِي شَيْئًا أَقْدِرُ عَلَيْهِ إِلَّا أَعْطَيتُهَا»
Muhammad bin Sirin said: In the time of Uthman bin Affan (may Allah be pleased with him), the price of a date palm reached one thousand dirhams. He said: Usamah went to a date palm, cut into it and took out its heart (pith), then fed it to his mother. People said to him: What made you do this, when you see that the date palm has reached a thousand? He said: "My mother asked me for it, and she does not ask me for anything within my power except that I give it to her."
