Qays bin Abi Hazim (may Allah have mercy on him) narrated: We came to visit Sayyiduna Khabbab (may Allah be pleased with him) in his illness, and he had had himself cauterised in seven places on his belly. He said: Had the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) not forbidden us to wish for death, I would have wished for it. Then he mentioned those of his companions who had passed away, that they passed away without consuming anything of their reward, while we remained after them until we obtained of this world that about which none of us knows what to do with it except to spend it on the earth, and that the Muslim is rewarded for everything he spends except what he spends on the earth.
