حَدَّثَنَا مَحْمُودُ بْنُ مُحَمَّدٍ الْوَاسِطِيُّ، ثنا وَهْبُ بْنُ بَقِيَّةَ، أَنَا خَالِدٌ، عَنْ عَطَاءِ بْنِ السَّائِبِ، عَنْ مُحَارِبِ بْنِ دِثَارٍ، عَنْ سَعِيدِ بْنِ زَيْدِ بْنِ عَمْرِو بْنِ نُفَيْلٍ، قَالَ: " بَعَثَ مُعَاوِيَةُ إِلَى مَرْوَانَ بْنِ الْحَكَمِ بِالْمَدِينَةِ لِيُبَايِعَ لِابْنِهِ يَزِيدَ، فَقَالَ رَجُلٌ مِنْ أَهْلِ الشَّامِ: مَا يَحْبِسُكَ؟ قَالَ: حَتَّى يَجِيءَ سَعِيدُ بْنُ زَيْدٍ فَيُبَايِعَ، فَإِنَّهُ أَنْبَلُ أَهْلِ الْبَلَدِ، فَإِذَا بَايَعَ النَّاسَ بَايَعَ النَّاسُ "
Muharib bin Dithar narrates from Sa'id bin Zayd bin Amr bin Nufayl (may Allah be pleased with him), who said: Mu'awiyah (may Allah be pleased with him) sent word to Marwan bin al-Hakam in Madinah that the pledge of allegiance be taken for his (Mu'awiyah's) son Yazid. A man from the people of Syria said: What is holding you back? He said: Until Sa'id bin Zayd comes and gives the pledge, for he is the most honoured man of the city; when he gives the pledge, the people will give the pledge too.
