Malik bin Abi Maryam al-Hakami (may Allah have mercy on him) says: Abd al-Rahman bin Ghanm al-Ash'ari came to Damascus, and a group of us gathered around him. We mentioned tila' (a drink made from the juice of dates or grapes); some of us permitted it and some of us disliked it. After we had discussed it, I came to him, and he said: I heard Sayyiduna Abu Malik al-Ash'ari (may Allah be pleased with him), the Companion of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), narrating from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) that he (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Some people of my Ummah will certainly drink wine, calling it by a name other than its own, and musical instruments and singing girls will be played over their heads. Allah will cause the earth to swallow them, and He will make some of them into monkeys and pigs."
