Abu al-Hawra' (may Allah have mercy on him) said: I met Sayyiduna Hasan bin Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) in Basrah and said: May I be ransomed for you, what have you memorised from your grandfather Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him)? He said: He (peace and blessings be upon him) taught me a few words which I say in the witr. I said: What are they? He said: "O Allah, guide me among those You have guided, grant me well-being among those You have granted well-being, take me as Your friend among those You have taken as friends, bless me in what You have given me, and protect me from the evil of what You have decreed; for indeed You decree and none can decree against You." I said: May I be ransomed for you, have you memorised anything else from him besides this? He said: I was walking with him in the orchard of sadaqah, and I took a date and put it in my mouth, and he put his hand into my mouth until he took it out, and said: "O my son, do you not know that we are a household for whom sadaqah is not lawful?"
